β-cyclodextrin (CD)-based Hydrogel Preparation Service

Unlocking Boundless Possibilities with β-Cyclodextrin (CD)-based Hydrogel Preparation

Due to their unique molecular structure and good biocompatibility, β-CD shows a wide range of potential applications in the fields of drug release, food processing, cosmetics, and contaminant capture and removal. Hydrogels are highly hydrated cross-linked polymer networks that have been widely used in biomedical applications. As a biosynthesizable and multifunctional molecule, β-CD is the preferred choice of cross-linking agent. β-CD-based hydrogel is a class of polymeric materials with a special three-dimensional network structure capable of retaining large amounts of water in its structure without dissolving. CD BioGlyco is dedicated to providing our clients with top-notch services in the field of GlycoCLICK™-based Biomaterial Preparation Service. One of our flagship services includes the preparation of β-CD-based hydrogels.

  • First, the appropriate amount of β-CD is added to the solvent and thoroughly mixed to ensure uniform distribution. Subsequently, a cross-linking agent such as formaldehyde or sulfur dioxide is gradually introduced during the mixing process. This addition induces the formation of a three-dimensional network structure in β-CD, resulting in hydrogel formation.
  • Next, a catalyst is incorporated into the reaction system to facilitate cross-linking reactions. The catalyst serves to enhance reaction rates and improve gel structure stability. Following this step, the reaction system undergoes either standing or heating at an optimal temperature. This procedure aids in promoting gel formation and curing processes while enhancing overall gel quality.
  • Finally, we process and purify the prepared hydrogels by centrifugation, washing, and drying. After removing residual solvents, unreacted materials, and other impurities, we obtain β-CD hydrogels with high purity and desirable properties.

Results: This paper describes the synthesis of a novel responsive hydrogel. The hydrogel is made by combining a temperature-responsive poly-N-isopropyl acrylamide with a β-CD capable of forming molecular inclusions. First, a macromolecular monomer is prepared by reacting β-CD-based polymer with maleic anhydride in dimethylformamide. Then, β-CD was introduced into the polymer network by copolymerization with N-isopropyl acrylamide in an aqueous solution. The hydrogel chain structure and physical properties were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, DSC, and dissolution experiments. This hydrogel not only possesses significant supramolecular encapsulation ability but also responds sensitively to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, and ionic strength.

Applications

  • In environmental science, β-CD-based hydrogels can be used to adsorb and remove organic contaminants such as heavy metal ions, pesticides, and organic solvents from water.
  • In the food industry, β-CD-based hydrogels can be used for encapsulation and release of food additives to improve the texture and taste of food products.
  • In the field of drug delivery, β-CD-based hydrogels can be used as carriers for drugs to control the rate and time of drug release by encapsulation and release, thereby increasing the efficacy of the drug and minimizing side effects.

Advantages

  • β-CD-based hydrogels are highly controllable and tunable, and their performance and functionality can be adjusted by changing their chemical structure and physical properties.
  • They exhibit excellent adsorption and selectivity, enabling the targeted adsorption and removal of specific molecules and ions for efficient separation and purification purposes.
  • They exhibit excellent stability and repeatability, ensuring consistent performance and functionality across diverse environments and conditions.
