β-cyclodextrin (CD)-based Polyterephthalate (PR) Preparation Service
Empowering Excellence Through β-Cyclodextrin (CD)-based Polyterephthalate (PR) Preparation
CD-based PR combines the host-guest interaction capabilities of CD to improve certain properties of PR, such as enhancing its barrier properties, improving its thermal stability, or giving it new functionalities. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a specific type of polyester-based on terephthalic acid (TPA). CD BioGlyco has been dedicated to providing expert GlycoCLICK™-based Biomaterial Preparation Service for several years, the biomaterials in our service include Glycosylation Carrier, Restricted Access Material (RAM), Hydrogel, Functional Biomedical Polymer, and PR. The process of our β-CD-based PR preparation service is outlined as follows:
- Usually, TPA or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) are commonly selected as monomers, while ethylene glycol (EG) serves as the other monomer. Subsequently, reaction materials such as CDs and catalysts are prepared, typically employing tin catalysts like dioctyltin oxide.
- We then combine TPA with EG in a predetermined ratio, incorporating a small quantity of catalyst, and conduct an ester exchange reaction or a direct esterification reaction at elevated temperatures to generate a low molecular weight prepolymer. Subsequently, we dissolve or disperse the CD in an appropriate solvent (such as water or alcohol), followed by the addition of the CD solution to the prepolymer. Continued heating and polycondensation reactions under vacuum eliminate the by-products and facilitate further polymerization of the prepolymer into a higher molecular weight polymer.
- After the completion of the polymerization reaction, we proceed to cool and retrieve the polymer from the reaction system while simultaneously eliminating any unreacted monomers, catalyst residues, and other impurities. Ultimately, a comprehensive evaluation of the properties of resulting materials is conducted.

Results: This article investigates the antimicrobial coating of PET based on curcumin/ CD complexes embedded in multilayer polyelectrolyte structures. This antimicrobial coating was prepared by embedding curcumin and CD complexes in multilayer polyelectrolyte structures. The use of curcumin and CD complex in the coating is to impart antimicrobial properties to the coating. Curcumin is a natural phenolic compound with antimicrobial activity. It can produce reactive oxygen species such as mono-linear oxygen and superoxide radicals by photodynamic action, which can have a bactericidal effect on bacteria. The CD is a cyclic starch molecule with good encapsulation ability that can form an encapsulation complex with curcumin. This complex can increase the stability and solubility of curcumin and release curcumin in the coating, thus enhancing the antimicrobial properties of the coating. This antimicrobial coating has good antimicrobial properties and can effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria.

Applications
- β-CD-based PRs are used as carriers in drug delivery systems, and CDs effectively encapsulate drug molecules to form micelles, contributing to drug stability and solubility.
- β-CD-based PR can be utilized for the adsorption and elimination of noxious substances in the environment, thereby efficiently purging pollutants from water or air.
- The PR/CD complex is a versatile tool for the extraction and isolation of diverse compounds.
Advantages
- Our preparation method exhibits a remarkable level of reaction efficiency, significantly abbreviates the synthesis duration, and effectively curtails expenses.
- We employ β-CD as a modulator in the synthesis of PR, enabling us to precisely regulate the length and structure of the molecular chain, thereby enhancing the properties of the resulting product.
- β-CD enhances the stability and solubility of PR, thereby enhancing its applicability in various fields.
